NO EXCEPTIONS!
I, Jennifer Bussey (Breeder), feel that there are several important issues concerning the health and welfare of your Great Dane. I have discussed the information with you, but I feel that it needs to be stated and acknowledged by all parties. This information is important and should be followed for the best interest of your Great Dane.
1.The first important issue is the feeding of your Great Dane. Always feed a food of 26%protein or less, fat should be 16% or less, calcium should be less than 2% and phosphorus less than 1%. This eliminates almost all puppy foods, including the large breed formulas. Your puppy will come to you eating premium natural dry food. The principle behind this is to allow for a slower growth rate which allows bones, cartilage, etc. to grow at a even rate. This slower, more even growth will not affect the size of your Great Dane at all. Basically, it helps to eliminate any hip or joint problems in the future caused by nutrition. Failure to comply with this could endanger your Great Dane as they get older.
2.The second important issue is health. Vaccinations. Your puppy received a Neopar (single parvo vaccine) at 3 1/2wks of age and a 5-way vaccine has been given to your puppy at 7 weeks age. The next vaccine should be given at 11 weeks of age. If you can't vaccinate on the scheduled time it will be OK to go a day or two LATER. With the exception of a rabies vaccine given after your puppy is 6 months old, this is the extent of vaccines for puppy needs. DO NOT give a 7 way vaccine or any vaccine that includes lepto. Administration g a lepto vaccine will void your guarantee!!!! It is highly recommended that your puppy be put on a monthly heart worm medication that should be started at 4 months of age. From 4 months on Buyer is to keep puppy on monthly heart worm and flea prevention. Failure to keep your puppy on monthly flea and heartworm prevention will void your guarantee. NOTE: In 2004 the 6 month medication was recalled because a number of dogs had died while on it.
3.The third important issue is the level of play for Great Danes. Lots of times people have the misconception of the appropriate level of play with a Dane puppy. Just because they are a large dog doesn't mean they can take excessive ruff play. It might be sweet and cute to see your child trying to ride his/her new Dane but it’s not that great of an idea! Of course play with your puppy but always consider the importance of its growth. I strongly recommend that you consider this for at least the first year of your Danes life. Growing puppies can even get growing pains from time to time.
4.The fourth important issue is whether to crop the puppy's ear or not. I do not recommend that you have the ears cropped. This is due to the complications that can occur during surgery, and could result in the death of said puppy. If you do decide to have the ears cropped PLEASE SCREEN YOUR VET. They must have a thorough understanding of the breed. Also make sure that they are aware of possible problems that can occur during anesthesia with Great Danes. A helpful website is www.doglogic.com Go into the health section and read the information on anesthesia and Great Danes, and the section on how to screen your vet. These articles are very informative to you as a new Great Dane owner. Jennifer Bussey (Breeder) consider this to be an elective, cosmetic surgery and is not liable for any deaths from ear cropping.
5.The fifth important issue is the spay and neuter section of our contract that goes with the Limited AKC Registration. Dogs sold to appropriate show/breeding homes on full registration are not required to spay/neuter unless the dog does not pass health testing. Many buyers ask us when the appropriate age is to have the surgery done; the spay of a female should occur between 18-24 months of age. The neutering of a male should NOT be done prior to 12 months of age and its recommended to wait till 18-24 months, as Males need that testosterone for healthy muscle development. Proof from your veterinarian of spay/neuter surgery must be sent to Jennifer Bussey (Breeder) by certified mail. Although we do not require our buyers to spay/neuter their Dane if you decline to have the surgery at the appropriate age per gender or not to send proof to Breeder voids all guarantees for said Great Dane. We do not force any buyer to spay or neuter their Dane as we understand that not everyone wants to have to put their Dane under anesthesia and/or through an unnecessary surgery. However, if you decline to have the surgery at the appropriate age per gender, or do not send proof to the Breeder it voids all guarantees for said Great Dane.
6.Finally, the issue of staying in contact; Contact from the Buyer(s) to Jennifer Bussey (Breeder(s) every three to six months on the welfare of said Great Dane is required for the life of said Great Dane. This allows Jennifer Bussey (Breeder) to be aware of conditions concerning said Great Dane. Contact is to be by either email or mail, which allows Breeder to place proof of contact into your file. Failure to maintain contact with Jennifer Bussey voids all guarantees on said Great Dane.
